The origin of the American national anthem goes back to, of all things, a British drinking song called Anacreon In Heaven or the Anacreontic Song. The American lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key, inspired by the siege of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, wrote a new set of lyrics, which became known as the Star Spangled Banner.
