"INTERNS WANTED" says the bogus flyer for the campaign of mayoral candidate and former congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY).  In order to qualify, the flyer continues, you must not be a cop, a snitch or a "slutbag", the insult hurled at a former intern after she left.

Ariel Castro, who kidnapped three women from 2002 to 2004 and held them captive in his house until this past May, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 1000 years, after pleading guilty to 937 counts including abduction, rape and murder in a deal to avoid the death penalty.  With a sentence that long, he'd better hope that the religions which believe in reincarnation are wrong.

A "sex tape" recorded made by Monica Lewinsky in 1997, during the height of her affair with President Bill Clinton, has reportedly resurfaced.  The recording is a little less than 4 minutes long, and contains only Lewinsky's voice.  Miss Lewinsky recently turned 40.  (Time does fly, doesn't it?)

A few stories and things going on:

From the Times Of Israel, an Arab member of the Knesset claims that Secretary of State John Kerry has promised that Israel will release all of its pre-Oslo prisoners so that peace talks resume.

From Natural News, the rover Curiosity is finding evidence that a "catastrophic event" stripped away the Martian atmosphere about 4 billion years ago.

From The College Fix, ten College Republicans were denied entry to President Obama's speech at Missouri Central University, even though they had bought tickets.  (via National Review Online)

From the Tampa Tribune, one of the jurors in the George Zimmerman trial says that he "got away with murder", but that there wasn't enough evidence under Florida law to convict him.

From the New York Post, there's a lake at the North Pole.

From the New York Daily News, former Congressman and current mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner (D-NY) has admitted to more online relationships.  This comes via Gateway Pundit, with some video of comedians giving Weiner some well-deserved ribbing.

From Fox News, Mrs. Weiner, a.k.a. Huma Abedin is facing questions about working part-time for the government while also working as a consultant for Teneo.

Also from Fox News, a majority of voters now doubts that immigration reform will ever happen.  This, of course, is good or bad, depending on how you define "immigration reform".

From Russia Today, Great Britain is putting up ads telling illegal immigrants to go home or be arrested.  Now there's a bit of immigration reform I could get behind.

From Creeping Sharia, Crayola(dot)com celebrates Ramadan.

From Business Insider, Halliburton will plead guilty to destroying evidence relating to the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

And from The Guardian, the newest heir to the British throne has been named George Alexander Louis.  The announcement of his name was relatively quick compared to other royal babies, such as his father and grandfather after their respective births.  Britain has had six kings ruling under the name George, the most recent being Queen Elizabeth's father.  Louis was the name of Prince Philip's uncle, Lord Mountbatten.

Twenty-Twelve was certainty an interesting year, especially if you understand "interesting" in the context of the old curse "May you live in interesting times."  We have seen the Supreme Court uphold "Obamacare" by calling its mandate a "tax", and strike down most of Arizona's SB 1070, while leaving intact its provision that allows state policemen to check the immigration status of people they legally stop.  We have seen a woman named Sandy demand that we subsidize her birth control and leftwingers accuse us of waging a "war on women" if we refuse, a hurricane named Sandy devastate the shores of New Jersey and New York City, and the mass murder of children by a mentally unstable gunman at an elementary school named Sandy Hook.   We have also seen two more end-of-the-world predictions, one based on a misunderstanding of the Mayan calendar, fail to take place.

Despite what appeared to be solid support for Republican nominee Mitt Romney, we re-elected President Obama, even though his economic and fiscal record is the worst of any president in my lifetime, and whose foreign policy record isn't all that great.  At least two promising GOP candidates for Senator derailed themselves by opening mouth and inserting foot.  The Democrats made modest gains in both houses of Congress, but for the most part, the next four years of federal governance appear to be "meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

In the world of sports, the New York Giants won the Super Bowl, and then failed to make the playoffs the next season, the third time in franchise history that they have done so.  Payton Manning (Denver QB) and Adrian Petersen (Minnesota TB) have had amazing comeback seasons.  Meanwhile in the NCAA, my Virginia Tech Hokies had their worst football season in 20 years, but still won their bowl game.  Penn State coach Joe Paterno was fired after his former assistant Jerry Sandusky was accused of child molestation.  Sandusky has since been convicted and Paterno has passed away.

As we reminisce about all of the above and more, and get ready for 2013, let's see what's going on to close out 2012.

From The Corner at National Review Onlinethere appears to be an agreement to avoid the upcoming "fiscal cliff".

On the other hand, the Daily Caller reports that the "fiscal cliff" negotiators haven't worked out the sequester, which remains "a point of contention".

According to Breitbart's Big Government, there's no deal yet, and negotiations will resume next year.

Redstate recommends that Republicans kill the deal, because there are no spending cuts.

From CNN Politics, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's blood clot, for which she has recently been hospitalized, is reported to be located between her brain and her skull.  (Full disclosure:  A member of my family had this type of injury about 8 years ago, which required removal of the overlying section of skull.)

From Fox News, Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) has asked the president to "rescind" an executive order that gives Congress and some other officials a pay increase.  (Is Senator Portman from Ohio or Oiho?)

Also from Fox News, the federal government is again running into the debt ceiling.

From Push Back Now, Senator and gun control advocate Diane Feinstein has had a concealed carry permit.

From the New York Post, a couple living in Greenwich Village have been busted for allegedly possessing weapons and bomb-making material.  One of them has been an Occupy Wall Street activist.

And from SFGate, a roundup of 2012 news for New England, featuring a bear that vacationed in Cape Cod.

Due to the fallout from the report by former FBI director Louis Freh, which found that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and others had covered up allegations of child sexual abuse by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, the university has removed the statue of Paterno from its pedestal outside Beaver Stadium.  The university's president Rodney Erickson has stated that the statue will be stored in a "secure location", and that the school's library will continue to bear Paterno's name.

Read more at ESPN, TMZ, ABC News, Fox News and USA Today.

In other developments related to Penn State and the Sandusky case:

According to Newsday, Paterno's family says that tearing down the statue will not help either the university or Sandusky's victims.

CBS Sports reports that Penn State will face "unprecedented" sanctions, to be announced tomorrow.

I'm not much into superstition, but on a previous Friday the 13th, I posted on Twitter, "Today, avoid black cats and liberals of all colors."  Here are some stories from the current Friday the 13th:

From Western Journalism, former Speaker Pelosi tells the Catholic Church to "drop dead".

From the Washington Free Beacon, the U.S. Olympic uniforms are made in (yeah, you guessed it) China.  The company that designed the uniforms is a donor to both Obama and the Democratic party.

From Patriots For America, a video report on the U.N. Small Arms Treaty.  The report claims that what the U.N. is really after is the ammunition.

From Michigan Capitol Confidential, the SEIU omits from their disclosure form a $12,000 payment to a company that was defunded by the Michigan State Legislature.

From Commentary, a report on Hamas summer camps for children.

From Fox News, a man's dying wish, to leave a huge restaurant tip, is granted.

Also from Fox News, an autistic man is found alive after being lost for 3 weeks in the Utah desert.

From NewsBusters, Howard Kurtz warns CNN that the "liberal media double standard" is apparent "to many people".

From ABC News, this one's from yesterday, but still important enough to mention.  Did the late Joe Paterno cover up for his former assistant Jerry Sandusky?

From Gateway Pundit, it's your tax dollars at work.  The federal government is giving away, not just cell phones, but air conditioners.

From EPA Abuse, how the EPA is taking over state's regional haze programs.

From Weird Asia News, are Japan's "concept cars" getting weirder?

From Yahoo News, a dishonest doctor in California found out the hard way that his patient was a real bitch.
